What's happening
May 10, 2003
Welcome back race fans. It's May 10th and we are back at the track for
another shot at the money. The crew and I spent all week working on the car, mainly
the rear suspension, to get ready. I know Shane does not want a loose
chassis like last week. After new springs, lowering blocks, new weight in different
places, and several hours on the scales, we think we got it on the money. Thanks to
Frank Ketchenoff for the help with the scales!!
Anyway back to the story.... the track officials want it tacky tonight and have
applied extra water to the track AND after the first packing sessions, they wet it again.
Hey guys! This is going to be messed up!! Just as we thought. It took almost 2 more
hours and every class of carsto repack the track. Heat race time and we are in the
3rd race, front row outside ( THIS WONT TAKE LONG ). The green dropped and Shane took off.
The guys and I nailed the set up and the car is showing it. On a really
greasy track, we hooked it up and Shane took the checkers 8 laps later with half a track
lead over 2nd place and lapping several cars.
Feature time and we are starting 2nd row inside. Man it's nice to start up
front!
The green dropped and Shane ducked inside of the 10 car and entered turn 1
in 2nd behind Deed Dupont in the 17 car when the caution came out. Time to
line them back up. Restart time and the 10 car didn't let Shane under him
this time so Shane kinda pushed him down the front straight. He got the message and
drifted up and Shane hit the bottom and was in 3rd down the back straight.
Unfortunately, 1st and 2nd place was almost a full straight ahead. Shane went to work
reeling them in.
Shane had just closed the gap 2 laps later when the caution came out for a
stalled car in turn 2. When the green flew on the restart, Shane took 2nd and then drag
raced Deed for the lead down the back stretch. Shane took the lead coming out of turn 4 and never looked back. Deed, in the 17 car, tagged the wall coming out of 4, 2 laps later and brought out the caution. Upon inspection in the infield, he had punctured a radiator hose and was unable to continue.
Damn the luck. He was running his butt off. The green dropped and Shane kept the lead. Several laps later, lap traffic was coming into play. With the white flag lap and coming out of
turn 3, Shane split the gap between 2 cars and got nailed in the right rear. Shane kept her
straight and held on for our 1st feature win of the season. Awesome driving Shane!!! I
can't ever remember seeing the car look like it did through the turns. Thanks to the
crew for all of the long nights last week and I got your pit passes next week.
Talk to you all next time.
